Yesterday being the last day in th month of April something happened that surprised me and at the same time made me proud. First of all how many of you out there (that is Nigerians) are firefighters of plan on being one? I bet none of you Nigerians reading this are. Well to the story, on my way back home, I met a young man in his early twenties in the bus and what brought my attention to him was the large fire fighting book manual he held in his hands and this naturally piqued my curiosity. Being a Nigerian that is. I then asked him if he was planning on becoming a fire fighter and he replied saying he was one already. This took me by even more surprise because not only was the guy young, he looked nothing like someone who was a fire fighter both in appearance and looks. Now, I'm not trying to say you can detect fire fighters by their looks but those of you who are Nigerians or live her will attest to the fact that there's probably no teen or youth you'll ask about his/her choice of career that will tell you he/she wants to become a fire fighter in Nigeria. The fact of the matter was i was tripped to see somebody so passionately describe the profession of fire fighting that it challenged me to share this. I n the west, it is not unusual to see kids who aspire to become cops, teachers, fire fighters and so on but in this part of the world, the story is not the same. Without conducting a survey, I can boldly say that 90% of Nigerians doing these jobs mentioned above do not actually want to do them. even if they've got a talent for it. I've got to admit I haven't had a flare for any of these professions but it doesn't mean people who do shouldn't pursue their area of strengths. Admittedly these jobs are not managed professionally by the government but then that is what you get when someone for example becomes a police officer so he/she can collect bribes. I strongly belief that if people in Nigeria like this young man I met yesterday pursued a career not because of the money involved but because they do what they love and are in a position to serve their country, these problems won't arise. I mean for example how do you expect a fire fighter who only took the job because he couldn't get any other one to respond quickly to a call about a burning building? His response would be lethargic compared to a guy who takes the same job because he's got a passion for people. The point I'm trying to make to those reading this is that it's better to do those things you love than pursuing money and if you're a Christian, you know that GOD loves selflessness and Christ our Saviour is our perfect example. Not everybody must work in banks or oil companies. My meeting with this guy has totally changed my mind about a lot of things and i want to urge you guys to emulate this example because eventually you'll get your just reward from GOD.
